Website Marketing Analytics: Identifying Business Website Visitors
Business customer website visitors may be identified in a Google Analytics or Yahoo! Web Analytics report based on the time of day in which they visit. Web analytics reports may reveal time of the business day -morning, noon or afternoon – that visits occur. Google Analytics may report that over 50% of users visit during the website owner’s business hours, between 8:00am and 5:00pm Eastern Standard Time (EST), for example. Yahoo! Web Analytics and Google Analytics allow business hours to be calculated based on the time zone (eg. Eastern Standard Time (EST)) within which a website owner operates. A user who browses a Toronto-based blog at 7:00pm might not be considered a business visitor in one web analytics report. However, business hours may also consider the time zone within which website visitors operate in both Google Analytics and Yahoo! Web Analytics. For example, West Coast (eg. Vancouver) site users might still be flagged as business visitors if they are on a Toronto-based blog at 7:00pm EST. Normalizing a website’s time of day visits is important if web analytics reports indicate that visitors are scattered across many time zones. Business users must then be defined as those who are on a website during their local business hours, not the website owner’s. The pie chart below reports the percentage of business website users according to the time of business day in which they visit a blog.

Both Yahoo! Web Analytics and Google Analytics may segment business website users according to geographic location, language and Internet keyword search interests. Online marketing campaigns and social media activity may then target business visitors with links, images and videos when they are most likely to be viewed. Website Marketing Analytics: Google Analytics Website Traffic Report and Website Marketing Analytics: Google Analytics and Website Host Reports further discuss Google Analytics website traffic reporting. Yahoo! Web Analytics reporting is addressed in Marketing Analytics Book: Yahoo! Web Analytics and Content Optimization.
