Marketing Analytics Quote: Tourism and Tablet Marketing
Tablets (eg. the Samsung Galaxy) on select WestJet long distance flights will be a source of entertainment in June, 2012. In a marketing test, passengers may rent a Samsung Galaxy Tablet that is pre-loaded with movies, TV shows and possibly games. Results of the test may determine whether WestJet replaces digital TV with pre-loaded Tablets as the entertainment option for passengers. Tablet PC computer ownership in Canada market share estimates indicate that the number of Anglophone and Francophone Tablet owners in Canada will approach 2,105,030 by 2031. “I think it’s a great idea because the screen quality on the WestJet flights was no longer competitive, and on long haul flights the free TV (initially a great plus on domestic flights) did not work. The introduction of Tablets will address this issue well without incurring the cost of overhauling the entire in-flight entertainment system. I would imagine that the Tablets will provide an opportunity for [tourism destination] marketing in the same way that Air Canada runs commercials before their movies.”
