Retail and mobile marketing analytics professionals may be interested that Mac’s and Couche-Tard convenience stores will direct ads at mobile (eg. BlackBerry, iPhone) users who are within range of a store location. It is unclear whether this advertising will be directed at smart phones only or also include Tablet PC (eg. PlayBook, iPad) mobile users. It will be interesting to follow whether other retailers opt to install their own location-based mobile marketing system rather than join a network such as FourSquare. Retailers faced a similar choice with regards to customer loyalty programs years ago. For example, Petro-Canada decided to create it’s own – very successful – in-house loyalty marketing program: Petro-Points. In contrast, other retailers – such as Shell, another gasoline retailer – joined the AIR MILES loyalty marketing program. Below is a quote from the March 23, 2012 National Post article regarding the Mac’s and Couche-Tard mobile ad network:
“Toronto based iSign Media Solutions has installed its mobile advertising network in more than 1,400 Mac’s and Couche-Tard convenience stores across Canada. The company’s technology interacts with mobile devices close to those convenience stores and sends free, permission-based interactive advertising messages to them related to Mac’s and Couche-Tard current products and promotions.”
