Tablet Marketing Analytics: iPads and PlayBooks as 'One-Size-Fits All' Mobile DevicesiPads, Androids, PlayBooks, and Samsung Galaxy Tablet PCs will replace smartphones and be one-size-fits-all mobile devices. A Tablet has the same functionality as a smartphone (eg. iPhone, BlackBerry), but it has a larger screen. E-mail may be sent, websites browsed, Internet searches conducted, and online videos watched on a Tablet PC with greater comfort to the eyes. Bluetooth technology makes it possible for one to videoconference with others using Skype and other communications technology: on a bus, sitting on a park bench or riding a golf cart. Apps may be loaded on a Tablet computer, just as they can a smartphone. For example, the Comwave ePhone for the BlackBerry PlayBook app lets someone send and receive phone calls on a PlayBook from anywhere. The portability of iPads and PlayBooks also make them ideal for consuming news, music and books on the go: a primary purpose of mobile devices. Yahoo!’s Livestand digital, personalized Tablet magazine app content platform is designed to deliver images, articles, videos, and music to Tablet readers based on their interests. And there may even be a role for displaying flash-animated corporate reports on a RIM PlayBook (Apple’s iPad does not currently support flash).

Product research and online purchases are easier on a Tablet’s larger, touch screen versus the limited viewing space on a smartphone. For example, a golfer may research golf courses and book a golf-tee-time or golf tour on an iPad or PlayBook. A wine lover might browse wineries and wine tour companies and then book a wine tour or purchase a favorite wine with a Tablet PC. Travelers could research and book a hotel room on a Tablet or food-lovers might review a restaurant menu and order fast-food. Livestand from Yahoo!’s personalized, digital magazine Tablet app will make it easier for the growing population of Tablet owners to access personalized content. And this is great news for those who love being entertained since iPads, Androids and Playbooks serve an entertainment function for owners.

However, Tablets are becoming more than a mobile device of entertainment and leisure. iPads, Androids and PlayBooks are portable in the home, at work and in-transit. Tablets may be used to turn home appliances on or off by timer to conserve energy. Likewise, an iPad, Android or Playbook may become the remote to monitor and control an electronic home security system. Or the temperature in a home may be regulated with a Tablet: keeping a house cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. The Rogers Smart Home Monitoring program allows a home owner to regulate the home environment from a Tablet device. In the future, Tablets may operate a TV or DVD player or even function as the remote control for electronic garage doors and lights.

Tablet PC computer ownership in Canada market share estimates indicate that the number of Anglophone and Francophone Tablet owners in Canada will approach 2,105,030 by 2031. Many Canadians will likely own one Tablet device for all of their mobile needs: read news and books, listen to music, monitor and control their home, watch online videos and movies, as well as research and buy products online. A Deloitte Canada study forecasts that many Canadians who own a Tablet will buy another one. As Tablets become one-size-fits-all mobile devices, Tablet marketing analytics professionals should find it easier to analyze and segment mobile users according to interests. This will also improve the accuracy with which mobile marketers may target individuals with videos, images, music, and articles that fit their entertainment habits: drinking wine, playing golf, snowboarding and skiing, staying in hotels, or eating at restaurants. And it will make digital Tablet magazine apps such as Livestand from Yahoo! more important marketing channels for online marketers.
